Researcher Graeme Moad has indicated that convict Elizabeth Mitchell also on the Lord Wellington is Michael's mother. Details not yet verified but his sources are listed below.

My GGGGrandmother Elizabeth MITCHELL (nee THOMAS) arrived in the Colony on the Lord Wellington, in 1820. She was born in Liverpool, Eng., in 1781. Married Thomas M.MITCHELL. They had 4 children, Elizabeth b.1802, Robert 1811, Mary November 6, 1815 and Thomas born 1817. Elizabeth Snr. was convicted of Uttering and sentenced, in the Cumberland Assizes to 7 years Transportation. Her eldest daughter Elizabeth married James WILBOW Jnr.. and after his untimely death , she married Alexander MORRISON in 1841. Elizabeth (Snr.) married James Jelly after arriving in the Colony. Elizabeth petitioned Gov. Macquarie, soon after arriving for a Pardon, which was granted.Elizabeth died in 1830 at Pitt Town.

7th Feb 1829 Lord Wellington Elizabeth Mitchell, for drunkenness, Ticket of leave cancelled. Published this date Sydney Gazette and NSW Advertiser.
No evidence in any records that have been found that Michael was related to this Elizabeth. He left the ship in Sydney and went on a sealing expedition the the South Shetland Islands with Richard Simmons as Master on the Lynx. In 1822 after his return from this expedition he joined John Grono's ship on a sealing expedition to New Zealand. Between sealing voyages he worked for William Grono at Windsor before marrying Jane Grono /MacKenzie in 1827.
