Parents

Elizabeth's parents are unknown.

Any suggestion that she was a daughter of Adam Claypoole and Dorothy Wingfield can be discounted. They married in 1586. They had a daughter Elizabeth but she married someone called John Durning.[1] In his will, dated 1 December 1598, Adam's father James left to "Elizabeth Cleypoole the daughter of [m]y son Adam Cleypoole 100 pounds at age 18 or at marriage".[2] That means Adam's daughter Elizabeth was unmarried and under 18 on 1 December 1598. The marriage of Elizabeth Claypoole, daughter of Adam Claypoole and Dorothy Wingfield, to John Durning is also given in the Visitations of Northamptonshire.[3]

Birth Date

An entry in a family tree on Geni.com gives her birth date as 1567.[4] No source is given to support this. No parents are suggested in this tree. Her last names are given as Barley, Claypool and Osborn, again without sources.

Marriage; Children Mary and John

A good source has not been identified for the marriage of an Elizabeth Claypoole to a John Osborn. Nor do such baptism records as exist for the children currently attached to her name their mother. There must be doubt as to the last name at birth of the wife of John Osborn. The first name of John Osborn's wife seems likewise not firmly evidenced.

Daughter Mary Osborne was stated in a previous version of the main part of the bio to have died in Newchurch, Kent, England, on August 21, 1701. There is a death record for a Mary Osborne who died in Newchurch in 1701, with her parents named as John and Elizabeth.[5] But daughter Mary's own profile gives her a birth date of 1594 and a date of 1612/3 for her marriage to William Willeborne. If that is right, she cannot be the Mary who died in Kent in 1701, and the death date and place raise obvious suspicions. As has been said by another WikiTree member,

Mary would have been 107. That is red flag #1. Parents' names were only usually given when the burial was of a child. And in the wrong part of the country. Red flag #2. This is not the right Mary. David Cooper There must be similar questions about the statement in a previous version of the bio that son John Osborne, Osborne-2362 died in Newchurch, Kent, England, on June 11, 1704. There is a death record for a John Osborne who died in Newchurch in 1704, with parents named as John and Elizabeth.[6] The profile of Osborne-2362 gives his death as in Connecticut in 1686 though, as is stated on his profile, the identification of son John with the John who died in Connecticut is doubtful.

It is almost certain that the Mary and John who died in Kent in 1701 and 1704 were children of a different and later Elizabeth. The naming of their parents in their death records suggest that they may have died as children, and if that is so, it clearly rules out an Elizabeth born in the 16th century being their mother.

Will of husband John

In the Bedfordshire Archives Catalogue is a will of John Osborne of Cranfield, yeoman, made with codicil 9 October 1626, proved 31 July 1627. The full will may cast light on family relationships, but only the catalogue entry is available online.[7] (Thank you to William Vaughan for finding this record.)

Death

A "widow Osburne" was buried in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, on April 25, 1639. No indication is given of her first name or family origin or who her deceased husband was.[8] This is presumably the "Elizabeth Osborne of Cranfield, widow" whose will (dated 17 April 1639, proved 21 May 1639) is in Bedfordshire Archives.[9] (Thank you to William Vaughan for finding the catalogue entry for the will.) In the absence of further information, it is not certain that this Elizabeth's deceased husband was John Osborn.
