"George Stoney ... married Elizabeth Johnston, daughter of James Johnston, Esquire, of Rath... When the Johnstons purchased Emell Castle, they abandoned their old home, Rath" - Major Stoney, 'Some Old Annals of the Stoney Family' (Woolwich: privately printed, 1879). The article 'Stoney of the Downs, co. Wicklow' in Joseph Jackson Howard and Frederick Arthur Crisp, 'Visitation of Ireland', vol. 2 (London, 1898), almost certainly influenced by Major Stoney, states: "Elizabeth ... dau. of captain Robert Johnston of Ballynockane, co. Tipperary, and sister and heir of Captain Robert Johnston of Emell Castle"; but the repetition of the name Robert suggests this is a mistake.
An alternative ancestry for Elizabeth is that she was the daughter of Thomas Johnston, who had been the agent or bailiff of Richard Carroll, heir to the O'Carroll of Ely, and who bought Emmel on 20 July 1782, it having been mortgaged to Simon Pepper of Lisanisky (G. N. Nuttall-Smith, The Chronicles of a puritan family in Ireland (Smith (formerly) of Glasshouse), Oxford U.P., 1923). But the author admits: "I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the details of this account of the Carroll family, which is taken from the 'King's County Directory' of 1890, published at Birr, whose editor probably got it from Thomas Lalor Cooke's 'History of Parsonstown'."
