About Thomas Stoney

"List of freeholders of the County of Tipperary in the year 1776" (National Archives M4910) includes Thomas Stoney of Greyfort in respect of land at Gortlaudroe. This is also in 'Freeholders' (National Library of Ireland GO 442).

Of Arran Hill and Emell Castle. Bought the head rent of Portland, which had been leased from the Earl of Antrim. Arran Hill, named after the Earl of Arran, a son of the Duke of Ormond, was rented from the Ormond family until about 1816: the original house was badly damaged by the Big Wind in 1839 and even the substitute is in ruins. Emell Castle was replaced by a new building in 1814.

Recorded as a Grand Jury member in Summer 1793, Summer 1794, Summer 1795, Lent 1796, Lent 1803 and Summer 1803 - Thomas U. Sadleir, Magistrates, grand jurors & high sheriffs for Co. Tipperary (National Library of Ireland GO 570).

"Was offered a Baronetcy in 1795 for his vote and influence, which he declined." - A. de L. Kirkpatrick.

Many rebels chose to surrender to him in 1798.

Thomas Stoney's wife was Ruth Fallin according to Harold Goodwillie's family tree of the Stoneys, and Ruth Falkiner according to 'Some old annals of the Stoney family', Burke's Irish Family Records, and the Visitation of Ireland.

Recorded in the 1821 census at Arranhill as 74 years old and living with a 68-year-old Miss Falkiner (possibly Elizabeth if they were not yet married) and a 79-year-old lodger, Pierson Forman - Parochial returns, Modreeny … (GO Ms. 572).

Burial place and date from Joseph Jackson Howard and Frederick Arthur Crisp, 'Visitation of Ireland', vol. 2 (London, 1898).
