Elizabeth Munnings was born about 1622, based on her age of 12 years in 1634) and baptized at Rattlesden, Suffolk, England on January 27, 1622. She was the daughter of ]]][[Groome-144[[|Elizabeth Groome and her husband George Munnings.12

On April 30, 1634, the following were enrolled as passengers aboard the Elizabeth of Ipswich, bound for New England. They are listed as "George Munning's" age 37, "Elizabeth his wife" aged 41, Eliz[abeth] Munning's" aged 12, and "abigail Munning's" aged 7. [2]The family first resided in Watertown, they moved to Sudbury in 1639 and then back to Watertown by 1641. In 1651 they moved to Boston.

Elizabeth accused a man by the name of Daniel Patrick of accosting her on three different occasions. On one occasion, when she was in her teen years, he put his hand into her bosom and attempted to kiss her. He approached her suddenly a second time and then a third time after she was married. Each time she was able to get away and after the third incident she went to her father's house in Watertown and then, in letter form, she revealed each offense to Governor John Winthrop. Patrick denied the charges.[3][2][4]

Elizabeth's probable husband was Edward Sturges;[4]married by about 1639 since that was the year their first child was born. Robert Charles Anderson in "The Great Migration" says of him, "...a portrait emerges of a very able man, highly respected in his community, but who pushed the limits of acceptable behavior."[2]

Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth (Groome) Munnings, died sometime before June 23, 1657, as at that time her father married 2ndly to Joanna (_____) Boyer, widow of Simon Boyer.

Elizabeth (Munnings) Sturges died sometime prior to April 20, 1692, probably at Yarmouth, as at that time her husband indicated his intention to marry Mary Rider, widow of Zachariah Rider of Yarmouth.[2]

Edward Sturges, son of John Sturges and Margaret Austen, married (1) Elizabeth Hinckley and (2) Mary, widow of Zachariah Rider on April 20, 1692 when he was 79 yr. of age. A marriage agreement was drawn on April 20, 1692 to assure the widow Rider the preservation of her property.

Research Notes

  • Samuel Paine Sturgis III in his article published in The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, Vol. 174, identified Elizabeth Munnings as a likely candidate as the wife of Edward Sturges. Previously his wife was thought to be Elizabeth Hinckley, but research by Robert Charles Anderson indicated she was not Sturges' wife.[5][6] See additional research notes on the profile of Elizabeth Hinckley.
  • Giving no source, Roger Faxon Sturgis gives Elizabeth, the wife of Edward Sturges, the death date of 1679.[7]
  • In 1914, Roger Faxon Sturgis in "Edward Sturgis of Yarmouth, Massachusetts and His Descendants" made a "compelling case that Elizabeth, Wife of Edward Sturgis was Elizabeth Hinckley. Based on naming patterns,[2] the identity was accepted until Robert Charles Anderson "pointed out conflicts in his Great Migration Sketch of Edward Sturgis." Mrs. Elizabeth Sturges had been harassed by one Daniel Patrick of Watertown, in her complaint to Governor John Winthrop she mentioned going to her father's house; but her father had never migrated to New England and did not live in Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Samuel Paine Sturgis III reviewed Watertown families for the correct Elizabeth, finding only two who were unmarried, born before 1625; Elizabeth Munnings, baptized at Rattlesden, Suffolk on January 27, 1621/2, whose family resided in Watertown from 1634-1639 & 1641 "is a likely candidate" as the wife of Edward Sturgis.[1]
  • 1641 Elizabeth Sturgis "made a plain statement of the assaults made on her by Captain Patrick, first at the time when she was a servant to Mr. Cumines and later after her marriage."[7][8]
