Biography
New Jersey records indexed on FamilySearch show the marriage in 1698, at Gloucester, New Jersey, of George Wightman and Elizabeth Wood. According to the index record, Elizabeth Wood was the daughter of John Wood and Sarah Wood and George Wightman was the son of George Wightman and Elizabeth Updike.[1]
Early in their married life, George and Elizabeth Wightman lived in Kingstown, Rhode Island. On 10 February 1711/2 they sold their farm in Kingstown, and the following year they bought a farm in Warwick, Rhode Island, where they lived thereafter.[2]
Elizabeth was the mother of all of the children of George Wightman. She died some time (probably not long) before George's second marriage, to Sarah Ladd, on 13 August 1738.[3]
Research Notes
In George Wightman of Quidnesset, R. I., Mary Whitman said the family name of Elizabeth, the first wife of Deacon George Whitman, was not determined. She reported a claim "seen in print" that Elizabeth was Elizabeth Waite, a daughter of Samuel Waite and sister to Samuel Waite, Jr., who married Alice Wightman. Whitman said found no evidence to confirm or support this claim.[4]
