About Elizebeth Townend
About Elizebeth Townsend: She was born at Cripplegate, Holborn, London in 1805 & christened In Dr William's Library. As she appears in the Non-Conformist Record Indexes 1588-1977, she was not an Anglican but a Non-Conformist or Evangelical in her Christian beliefs. She was baptized in Dr William's Library which refers to its benefactor Daniel Copper Williams (1643-1716, who was a minister & theologian within the Presbyterian tradition. Born in Wales, he ministered in Ireland between 1664-1687. Samuel Marsden was a colleague & he knew Richard Baxter. He preached to the congregation at Wood Street in Dublin between 1667-1687 He died in Hoxton, London in 1716 & was buried at Bunhill Fields. He left donations to seven Charity schools in Wales & 7600 volumes to establish a library which still exists in 2023 in Gordon Square, Bloomsbury. It is a theological library intended for the use of ministers of religion, students of theology & ecclesiastical history. Historically it had a strong Unitarian focus, as several of the first directors were associated with Newington Green Unitarian Church, one of North London's oldest Unitarian churches. This church has had affilliations to political radicalism for over 300 years & is still in use as a Nonconformist church. It was founded in 1708 by English Dissenters. Dr Richard Price, a political radical & preacher & Mary Wollstonecraft were both prominent members. {Wikipedia}
. In 1841 Elisebeth is living with her husband William Townsend at Tulse Hill, Streatham, Surrey. Her name is spelt differently and she was born "out of County" that is not in Surrey. They have 4 sons : Edward ,Alexandre ,George, & Herbert Townsend'
In 1871 she is living with her husband William Townsend(79), a retired East India merchant at 5 Dyke Road villas. In 1881 she is head of house at 21 Denmark villas, Hove, Sussex and a widow aged 75 and an income consultant or landlord. Her son William is 49 and unmarried and is busy collecting house rents, while her married daughter Edith Berners is in charge of the mortgages. Elisebeth's granddaughter Mabel is a scholar at 13. There is no mention of Elisebeth's husband as he had died in early 1881. It sounds as though the family owns properties in the Brighton, Hove area and are kept busy administering the business thus generated. Another relation is helping with house rents, namely: Mrs Caroline Cooke, a niece aged 51, born Aston Sandford in Buckinghamshire. Elisebeth Cooper was one of a large family, she had four brothers: Henry M Cooper 1803-1851, James Ashley Cooper 1798-1864, William Northgraves Cooper 1807-1860, & Thomas Cooper 1815-1891. Elizabeth Townsend had 4 or 5 sisters including Jane Cooper 1796-1846, Mary Cooper 1800-1891, Anne Cooper 1802-1886, & Sarah Price (Cooper) 1810-1887. Born during the Napoleonic Wars, the family lived at an exciting, dangerous time.
