In 1868 he was in Hankow, China & acting as a Clerk in a merchant's company, Later, he was working with his brother Edward Townend as an East India Merchant while Alexander Townend in 1871 is described as a 'colonial broker or East India Merchant in1881 & Herbert, known as Bertie Townend is described as a tea broker in 1871. {Hankow Directory, 1874} Although a small place inland from the coast, Hankow near Wahan is situated on the Yangtze river linking central China with the East China sea at Hangzhou. In the Directory, Hankow had 45 merchants listed while Foochow & Amoy had far less. Hankow was a hub for land & river traffic, both for Chinese & foreign merchants. In the 1871 census, Montague S Townend was living at Kidbrooke Park Rd, Kidbrooke, London, Kent with his wife Harriett L Townend & two small children Ada Constance & Eustace Montague Townend. In 1891 Montague Townend was in Brighton , now aged 49, his wife Harriet was 45, his daughter Ada Constance was 22 & a son Easton Montague Townend was 20 & Cecil M B Townend was 11 (born1880)
