About William Tea Townend

ABOUT WILLIAM TOWNsEND born October 21, 1791 in London; he was christened on November 30 1791 in the City of London. He married Elizebeth Cooper on June 15th 1830 in Streatham, Surrey. On December 23rd In 1835, they are said to have bought 99 town acres of land in Adelaide, South Australia. William was described as a merchant in the 1841 census, when he was living at Upper Tulse Hill, Streatham, Surrey, England. His employers were the East India Company . Previously, from 1676 -1834 the East India Company held a monopoly & were the sole legitimate importers of tea into the United Kingdom. His wife Elizebeth was present with four young children, namely Edward, 6 years; Alexandre, 4 years; George, 3 years; and Herbert, 1-year-old. In the 1851 census, the family have moved and are living at 2 Lloyd's Place, Lewisham, Kent, England. William Townsend is aged 19, Elizabeth is 17 years old, Edward is now 15, Alexander 14: Montague is 9 and Edith is 6 years old. A niece is visiting them: Grace Price, aged 15, born in Islington, Middlesex. Her mother is Sarah Price, born Cooper, probably a relation of Elizebeth Townsend's. William Townsend was employed by the East India Company as a Tea Merchant and later he established his own company William Townsend & Co. at 18, Lime Street, London. In 1871, William is 79 & has retired from the East India Merchant Company. He and his 65 year old wife Elizabeth are living in one of a row of villas in Brighton, Sussex & their two eldest William Townsend Jnr 39 & Elizabeth 37 are still at home, running a property business. In 1873, his son William died at 41 years old in Sussex, England. William Senior's wife Elizebeth lived till 1882, so she was 76 years old at her death. There is a gravestone inscribed In loving remembrance of Elizabeth Townend relict of William Townend who fell asleep 1882 aged 86 but this is probably not relevant because her name is spelt incorrectly & so is their surname & the ages do not match & it is ambiguous.
