About Emma Bodenheimer

Family Samuel and Emma Bodenheimer, née Leva

After David Leva and his wife had fled to France, his sister Emma and her two children Jakob Ernst and Alice Regina moved into her brother's house at Vierlingstraße 17 on September 15, 1938. Emma Leva, born on March 4, 1867 in Ruchheim, had married Samuel Bodenheimer in her birthplace on October 19, 1892. The latter had been born on September 4, 1851 in Lachen, today a district of the city of Neustadt. He died in Heidelberg on November 12, 1920.

This marriage produced four children, all of whom were born in Lachen: Rosalie, on February 12, 1894, who died in Lachen on February 14, 1894; Jakob Ernst, on October 26, 1895; Wilhelm Emanuel, on April 25, 1898, who perished in the Auschwitz concentration camp in December 1943; and Alice Regina, on September 22, 1900.

The widow and mother Emma died already on December 10, 1938 in the hospital in Bruchsal. Only one month earlier, on November 10, 1938, the Bodenheimers' apartment at Vierlingstraße 17 was raided by Nazi henchmen who smashed everything to pieces. On that day, the son Jakob Ernst was sent to the district court prison in Frankenthal and from there to the Dachau concentration camp, where he remained for about six weeks. On November 10, 1939, he escaped to the Netherlands and then emigrated to the USA. He lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, where his life ended on December 1, 1981.

His daughter Alice Regina was deported from Frankenthal to the "Camp de Gurs" on October 22, 1940. From there she was sent to the Rivesaltes camp on March 11, 1941, and to the Drancy transit camp on September 13, 1942. She was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp with transport No. 33 on September 16, 1942. She has been missing since then.
