"Malan‟s sisters also carved out their own niches. Essie and Annie both served on the Censorship Council, edited the children‟s column for Die Kerkbode, and were active organisers of the local eisteddfod and dramatic societies."

"Essie published a novel entitled Deur ’n Geleende Bril, which is fascinating as a piece of ACVV propaganda. The book tells the tale of a well-educated young Afrikaner woman who is worried about the poor white problem. This woman fervently believes that the problem is the result of competition from black people on the one hand, and the spiritual poverty of the poor white class on the other. The only solution, she believes, is education, spiritual upliftment, pride in one‟s work – no matter how lowly that might be – as well as the eradication of racially-mixed residential areas. She decides to study the problem more closely by disguising herself as a white servant girl and accepting work with a wealthy Afrikaner family. In the process she meets other white servants and does her best to improve their lives by educating them about matters such as personal hygiene and reading good literature – especially works published in Afrikaans. She visits a racially-mixed slum yard, which she finds appalling, and expresses admiration for those Afrikaner families who still do their best to keep themselves apart from their coloured neighbours. Eventually her experiment fails, because she is incapable of concealing her good breeding from her employers. Her immaculate grooming, wide general knowledge and extensive vocabulary, along with her appreciation of music, literature, art and the like, give her away – and cause her employer‟s unmarried twin-brother to fall in love with her."
