Per the Ventura Free Press Newspaper, Ventura, California, Friday, November 29, 1895, 5,3: "WOODS--CHAFFEE. A Charming and Interesting Wednesday on the Avenue. The marriage of Fred Emmett Woods and Miss Ethel M. Chaffee was celebrated at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, 1895, at the home of the bride's mother on the Avenue, only the relatives and a few intimate friends of the contracting parties being present. The home was beautifully decorated throughout, the decorations being most artistic and reflecting great credit upon Misses Grace Woods, Helen Nideffer [Nidever] Grace Flint and Mrs. Mattie Steward-Poplin, who took charge of this portion of the preparations for the occasion. In the room where the ceremony was performed, numerous baskets of beautiful ferns were hung, while the walls, pictures and mantel were artistically draped with smilax. The curtains were draped with asparagus ferns, while in the spacious bay window, where the bridal party stood, there hung a magnificent basket of mist ferns, and in the background were choice potted plants. The large and spacious dining-room, where the guests were seated at two long tables and served with dainty refreshments, was ornamented with grasses, ferns, chrysanthemums and roses, the tables being draped with smilax and white satin ribbon. While Mendelssohn's wedding march was being played by Mrs. Mattie Steward-Poplin, the party took their places, and Rev. Mr. Thurston in a brief but impressive manner, performed the ceremony. The bride wore a rich, white flowered dress, silk trimmed in pearl and orange blossoms. The bridesmaid, Miss Grace Woods, sister of the groom, wore a dainty white dress of India silk, trimmed with lace. Both the bride and the bridesmaid, carried beautiful boquets of mist ferns, tied with white satin ribbon. The groom and best man, A. L. Chaffee, brother of the bride, wore the conventional black. The maids in attendance, Misses Pearl and Grace Foster, Helen Nideffer and Grace Flint, were becomingly dressed in white. After the supper, the bride was blindfolded, while around her gathered the circle of maidens present, to one of which she handed her boquet, this signifying the next bride to be, the fortunate young lady being the bride's cousin, Miss Helen Nideffer. The evening's pleasures were concluded in conversation and music. The wedding gifts were many, costly and beautiful. The carriage which bore away the happy couple to their future home on the Avenue, was artistically decorated with old shoes and plentifully sprinkled with rice. The many friends of both bride and groom tender their hearty congratulations and best wishes for their present and future happiness."
