Per Tulare County Newspaper Obituary April 1940: "L.W. CHAFFEE TAKEN BY DEATH Lawrence Wayne Chaffee Sr., 59, Visalia electrical contractor, died at his home, 515 W. Acequia St. last night, after several months of ill health. Although Chaffee had been under doctor's treatment for some time he was up and about. Yesterday morning he went to town and last night was stricken, dying about 10 p.m. A native of Ventura, CA, Chaffee was born July 26, 1880. He attended schools at Ventura and later was graduated from Healdsburg state college at Healdsburg. He was married on November 24, 1901, in Ventura to Ella Bounds. They moved to Visalia in 1910 and Chaffee was employed at the steam plant on East Main St. by the Mt. Whitney Power Co. He later went into business for himself and continued as an electrical contractor until his death. Chaffee was active in community affairs and held membership in the Visalia Moose and Elks lodges. Survivors include: his widow, Mrs. Ella Chaffee, Visalia; a son, Lawrence W. Chaffee Jr., of Modesto; three grandchildren; a brother Chester C. Chaffee, Ventura; and three sisters, Mrs. Marcus McElhaney, Santa Barbara, Mrs. Helen Wilde, Ventura, and Mrs. Bessie Staley, Martinez. Funeral services will be conducted from the Hadley Chapel tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. with the Visalia Elks Lodge officiating. Burial will take place in the Visalia Cemetery."
