Walter Scott Chaffee Jr., otherwise known as W.S." or "Domp" Chaffee, was manager of the Ventura Wharf & Warehouse Co. for 11 years and was manager when he became ill and his son took over about 1935. He was born in his grandparents's house, the Nidever home, in Santa Barbara. His grandparents were John Marion Nidever I & Mary "Polly" King Vernon Nidever. W.S. was the first and only child of Walter & Rebecca to be born in Santa Barbara. He worked for many years for his father, Walter Scott Chaffee Sr., at the Chaffee Store, Bank of Ventura and the Chaffee Real Estate Company, before and after his father passed away in 1894. Per the History of Ventura County, by E.M. Sheridan in 1926: "W.S. Chaffee received his education in the old public school(s) in Ventura, and on leaving school he drove a delivery wagon. Then for about seven years he rode the range, after which he entered the employ of the Associated Supply Company, at Coalinga, where he remained for four years. He then engaged in farming, to which he gave his attention until 1923, when he came to Ventura and accepted the position he now occupies, as manager of the wharf company."
