About Exequiel Sevilla

Exequiel’s general weighted average (GWA) of flat 1.0 at the University of the Philippines (UP) has not yet been matched at that university as of 2023. He is considered to be one of the four pillars of the Philippine actuarial profession. These four pillars - Exequiel, Emeterio Chavez Roa, Luis Rada Salvosa, and Manuel Ochoa Hizon - were collectively known as the Gang of Four (the Philippines' four actuarial pioneers). Manuel was Exequiel's second cousin on his father's side.

He was born in 1904 in the Binondo compound housing the Sunico foundry. He graduated from the Paco Intermediate School (the largest parochial school in the Far East by 1912) as valedictorian (1919). He graduated from the Manila North High School (in 1918, as half of the Manila High School, the first American-established public high school; now the Arellano High School) as First Honor in 1923. In 1927, the Office of the Insular Treasurer of the Philippine Islands (under the American colonial government) appointed him as government pensionado for actuarial science; he consequently left for the University of Michigan on 20 August of that year. By the school year 1928 - 1929, he would be an assistant instructor of mathematics at the University of Michigan. In 1936, President Manuel Quezon appointed him to the Board of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS). In 1945, President Sergio Osmena would similarly appoint him to the Board of the GSIS.

He co-founded Sevilla & Nietes Consulting Actuaries with Augusto Macuja Nietes.
