About Ferdinand Petersen
Ferdinand Petersen of Durant, who observed his 100th birthday last May, died at his home in Durant at 2:30 p.m. Monday, following an illness of a few days.
The body was removed to the Frick Funeral Home, where it will remain until 10:00 a.m. Thursday, when it will be taken to the Durant chapel for funeral services at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Durant Cemetery.
Durant's oldest resident was born May 21, 1847, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He served in the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871, and then came to the United States to Cedar County, Iowa in 1872.
He married Mary Jockheck on February 7, 1877 in Davenport. They farmed for more than 36 years near Sunbury and retired in 1913 and moved to Durant. Mrs. Petersen died in 1919.
Survivors include two sons, Ernst F. Petersen and Adolph F. Petersen, both of Sunbury; three daughters, Mrs. Paul Lage and Mrs. Clarence Gruemmer, both of Davenport and Miss Viola Petersen at home; 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, George and Ferdinand Petersen, a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Petersen, two grandchildren, three sisters and seven brothers.
