About Floyd A. Nelson

Floyd A. Nelson

     Died May 3, 2002

FRANKFORT - Floyd A. Nelson, 77, of Frankfort, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2002, at The Maples, where he had been compassionately cared for over the past three months.
Floyd was born Aug. 16, 1924, in Northport, to the late Nels and Augusta (Johnson) Nelson, and moved with his family to the Point Betsie Light Station in 1931, where his father continued to serve with the U.S. Coast Guard. As children, he and his sister carried stones from the beach to aid their father in constructing the porch at Point Betsie, which remains today.
Floyd attended school in Frankfort and was active in both track and football. He was selected to the all century football team in 2000. He entered the U.S. Navy in October 1943, and served honorably in the Sea Bees until April 1946. He married Ruth Hollenbeck on June 14, 1947, and together they raised two sons. Floyd was employed by the Ann Arbor Railroad as a detective and later joined the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier until his retirement in 1986. After retiring, he and Ruth spent their winters in the Seattle area with their son Tim and his wife, Cathy (Slotnick). When in Frankfort, he enjoyed restoring old furniture and drinking coffee with his many friends who stopped by the shop.
He was a confirmed member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, a life member of Crystal Lodge #270 F&AM and a member of John A. Mortensen Post #221 American Legion, all in Frankfort, and a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association.
Floyd is survived by his wife, Ruth; his son, Tim (Cathy) Nelson of Sarasota, Fla.; his sister, Lorraine (Keith) Hollenbeck; sisters-in-law, Marion Holmes, Dorothy Nelson and Alice Hollenbeck; brother-in-law, Robert (May Kay) Hollenbeck; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Paul; two brothers, Melvin and Stanley; and two sisters, Wilma Vincent and Elvesta Frederick.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 18, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort, with Pastor Rick Stieve officiating. Interment will be in Lutheran Cemetery.
