John Harrell Jr./Sr. was one of the first Harrells to settle in Bertie County just above the Roanoke, and he probably was a brother to one of the Samuels, Thomas, and Joseph Harrell discussed in the three previous sections—and, of course, he was the son of John of Nansemond.

Francis Harrell was born in 1695 in New Kent, Virginia. He married Mary Benton in 1720 in North Carolina. He died in 1763 in Bertie, North Carolina, at the age of 68.

The Last Will and Testament of Francis Harrell names his wife Mary, sons Jacob, John, Francis, William, and Shadrack. His daughters were Mary Averet, Sarah Saulsbury, Elizabeth Carril (sic), and Martha Harrile.

Notes for MARY BENTON: Mary's maiden name has not been documented satisfactorily.Several have listed her name as Benton, but have given no evidence.
