FRANCIS, Boston 1635, came in the Planter, aged 30, that yr.

with w. Rachel, 20, and two ch. Rachel, 2 € yrs. and John, 9

mos.; liv. aft. at Braintree, and d. 27 May 1692, "upwards of

100 yrs. old," as was fondly told, tho. the gr.st. more

moderate in its exaggera. says aged 100 yrs. but prob. only 87;

had Hannah, bapt. 15 Oct. 1637; Mary, b. 31 Mar. 1640; Sarah,

24 May 1643; Judith, 16 Jan. 1646; Peter, 16 May 1648; Abigail,

16 July 1651; Leah, 30 July 1654; and Eliz. 26 Aug. 1658, when

the folly of tradit. would make her mo. over 66 yrs. old. Mary

Della Kendall Hall, The Ancestry of Athalia (Haws) Kendall

(1886-1964) .., (Ward Pub.Co, Asheville, NC:1988), Family

(hereafter cited as Hall, Ancestry of Athalia Kendall). Thomas

Newcome was vicar of the parish of Bardwell, Essex, in 1596,

and also served at Thorpe next Ixworth in 1603. Arms of a

lion's head between three crescents were borne by

Newcomb/Newcome/Newcomen of Layham and Marlesford. A John

Newcome had lived at Exning in the west of Suffolk, but no

record is known after the death of his wife around 1696. The

Newcome name is more plentiful in Cambridge, to the west, and

in Essex, south across the river from Sudbury.[:ITAL]

Francis Newcomb born c1605

Francis Newcomb is ancestor to many of the North American

Newcomb(e)s. He is featured in the genealogy "Genealogical

Memoir of the Newcomb family" published in 1874 by John Bearse

Newcomb of Elgin Illinois. The book tells us Francis came to

New England April, 1635 at age 30 with wife Rachel 20, daughter

Rachel 2 1/2, and son John 9 months, on the ship Planter. They

lived in Boston for 3 years and then settled at Mt. Wollaston

(later called Braintree) Massachusetts. Children of Francis &

Rachel Nucome born in New England: Mary (b1640), Sarah (b1643),

Judith (b1645), Peter (b1648), Abigail (b1651), Leah (b1654),

Elizabeth (1658).[:ITAL]
