Research Note
The suggestion that Peter Adams' wife Rachel was perhaps Rachel Newcomb/Newcome arises in Clarence Torrey's New England Marriages prior to 1700. The sources cited in the 2015 edition of that volume are:[3] {NYGBR 12:10; Reg. 48:191, 85:383; Brainerd Anc. 7; McIntire Anc. 282; Bartlett: H. Reviewing all of Torrey's web-accessible[4] sources, this researcher found only one that suggests the Newcomb connection. That source, [www.familysearch.org/library/books/viewer/19887/?offset=38#page=44&viewer=picture&o=&n=0&q= Bartlett, J. Gardner, John Hill of Dorchester . . ., (Boston, 1904, Lew C. Hill), p. 43,] viewable on familysearch.org], says Peter Adams "married Rachel ____. She was perhaps the Rachel born in 1632, daughter of Francis and Rachel Newcomb of Braintree." He does not cite a source for that. Halsey Bullen, November 2022.
Anderson's monumental study lists Rachel Newcomb and gives that birthdate and sources for her emigration to New England in 1635 as a child, but indicates that he found no further record of here in New England.,[1] Peter Adams might have married her, or might instead have married some other woman named Rachel who was of marriageable age and happened to be in or near Braintree in 1650. Further research into early Braintree records might narrow that down to Rachel Newcomb. However, another sometimes helpful guide, the names that Peter and Rachel chose for their children, don't support that, having little in common with the names of Rachel Newcomb's parents and siblings..
