Biography

Francis Slaughter was born about 1653 in St. Mary's parish, Essex County, Virginia. He was the only child of Francis Slaughter and Elizabeth Underwood. He married Margaret [Hudson or Gaines] about 1675. Her parents are not known. By 1685, he was Sheriff of Rappahannock County, Virginia. Francis and Margaret had five children. The will of Francis Slaughter, dated November 6, 1718, Essex County, Virginia, probated March 4 1718/9, mentioned wife, but did not mention son Robert.


Francis Jr., was the only son of Captain Francis And Elizabeth (Underwood) Slaughter. He is referenced in a gift from Margaret (then Lucas), his grandmother, of a cow for his use on 5 January 1663-64 (ref: - Old Rappahannock VA Records 1656-64, p. 326). Francis is styled as a planter in Richmond County, Virginia. The Will of Francis directs that his goods made over to his wife by a deed of gift before marriage be well and truly paid, and that as, with his wife's consent he had sold a Negro called Frank, given her by that deed, which in lieu of dower, he directs that she be given a Negro called Caesar. His will further provides that his wife be given corn in the ground and other necessaries for the maintenance of her family. All the rest of his estate, real and personal hebequeaths to his daughters, Mary and Elizabeth. Son-in-law John Taylor, is designated as the sole executor.

TO ALL PEOPLE to whome these presents shall come, FRANCIS SLAUGHTER sends Greeting; Now Know ye that I said FRA: SLAUGHTER of Parish of St. Maries in County of Richmond out of the good will I bear to ANN HUDSON of the Parish and County aforesaid and in consideration of a Marriage to be had and solemnized betweene the said FRA: SLAUGHTER SENR and AN HUDSON, do give and grant unto ye said AN HUDSON in lieu of her Dowry after my death, One hundred acres of Land, vizi att ye North and North East end of the Land I now live on including the Plantation so Farr as ESQR. WORMLEYs New Line and the use of one Negro called Frank and two feather beds and furniture during her naturall life and after to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten in marryage by ye said FRA: SLAUGHTER SENR., the said Land, Negro and beds To have and to hold to said AN HUDSON and to the heirs of her body as aforesaid always provided that if sd. AN HUDSON die without heirs of her body begotten by ye said FRA. SLAUGHTER that then the Land and Negro returne to the use and behoofe of said FRA: SLAUGHTER and his heirs for ever provided also that if ye marryge between FRA: SLAUGHTER and ANN HUDSON be not solemnized before the Twentieth day of August nett that then the Land Negro and beds be deemed and forever remains to the use of said FRA: SLAUGHTER SENR. and his heirs anything to the contrary before mentioned notwithstanding: In Wittness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale this eleventh day of July 1711
