Frank Philander Cranney

Word was received in Star Valley Wednesday of the tragic hit-and-run accident in Salt Lake city Tuesday night which took the lives of a former Star Valley elderly couple, Mr and Mrs. Frank P. Cranney. They were on their way to a church service in Salt Lake, where they have been residing since 1943, and were caught in the middle of the street when a traffic light changed when they were struck by the automobile. The hit-and-run driver has been apprehended. For further details we refer you to the account taken from the Salt Lake Tribune: Driver Confesses David Grant McMillan, 23, 327 5th East, confessed Wednesday morning to driving the automobile which struck and killed Frank P. Cranney, 79, and his wife Eliza J. Cranney, 70, Tuesday at 7:25 p.m., Sgt F. Clark Sanford, head of the police traffic detail reported. Sgt. Sanford said McMillan made the confession after viewing the death auto. Complaints charging McMillan with involuntary manslaughter for the death of Mr Cranney and with hit-run driving in the death of Mrs. Cranney were signed Wednesday morning before Judge Joseph G. Jeppson of city court. Bail was set at $500 on each of the charges. He left the scene of the accident after his auto struck and killed the Cranney couple, who were crossing State st. at 7th South arm in arm because he was frightened, David Grant McMillan said Wednesday in Salt Lake county jail. Served in Legislature Mr Cranney was a prominent Star Valley, Wyo., rancher who had served in both branches of the Wyoming legislature, was dead when police officers removed him from the scene of the accident. Mrs. Cranney was pronounced dead upon arrival at Salt Lake general hospital. Mr Cranney was knocked 95 feet from the point of impact and his wife 35 feet, "indicating excessive speed" on the part of the death vehicle, said Sgt. F. Clark Sanford. Noted License Sgt Sanford praised cooperative of witnesses whose accounts of the accident and alertness in obtaining license number of the death vehicle and made prompt tracing of it possible. He said the automobile has blood on it, and parts of it found at the scene fit the auto found at McMillan's home. Officers who participated in the investigation and arrested McMillan were Detective LeRoy Iverson, special hit-run investigator; v.R. Heath and G.E. LaTulippe, traffic investigators. Mr and Mrs. Cranney moved to Salt Lake City from Wyoming in 1943. Both were active in L.D.S. Church activities. Mrs Cranney was a teacher in the Relief Society and Mr Cranney had served as bishop of Smoot L.D.S. ward and was a member of the seventies quorum, Third L.D.S. ward in Salt Lake City. Though retired as a Wyoming rancher, Mr. Cranney was associated with his son-in-law, James B. Reed, Salt Lake City, owner and operator of Capitol Cleaners and Dyers. Leave Nine children Mr and Mrs. Cranney are survived by nine sons and daughters; Mrs. Winifred Garrett, Kaysville; Mrs. Beth Johnson, Ogden; Mrs. Hattie Smith, Midvale; Mrs Ruth Craig, Sacramento, Cal., Mrs June Monson, Pleasant grove; Mrs Genevieve Reed, Salt Lake City, H.K. Cranney, Afton; Ciril Cranney, Afton, and Lt (J.G.) Richard Doyle Cranney, now stationed in the Philippine Islands, and 28 grandchildren. Mrs Cranney was born Oct 17, 1867, in Morgan, a daughter of Mr and Mrs. Fred Kingston. She also is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Peterson, Morgan; Mrs Loucie Poulson, Morgan and Mrs Sarah Taggart Smoot Wyo. Mr Cranney was born Jan 11th 1865, in Logan, a son of Mr and Mrs. H.K. Cranney. He also is survived by two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. W,M, Lohman, Logan; Mrs S.W. Kingston, Malad, Idaho; W.T. Cranney Burley Idaho and W.W. Cranney, Mesa Arizona. Funeral service for Mr and Mrs. Cranney will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at 125 N. Main where friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Addition services will be held in the Afton North Ward chapel either Saturday or Monday depending upon word received from their son Richard. Interment will by in the Auburn Cemetery.
