George John James Hamilton-Gordon, 5th Earl of Aberdeen was born on 28 September 1816 at Bentley Prior, Stanmore, London, England. He was the son of George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen and Harriet Douglas. He married Lady Mary Baillie, daughter of George Baillie of Jerviswoode and Mellerstain and Mary Pringle, on 5 November 1840 at Taymouth Castle, Perthshire, Scotland. He died on 22 March 1864 at age 47 at Haddo House, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, ScotlandG. He was buried at Methlick, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

He was styled as Lord Haddo between 1816 and 1860. He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, England. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1837 with a Master of Arts (M.A.) He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Aberdeenshire between 1854 and 1860. He succeeded as the 5th Earl of Aberdeen on 14 December 1860. He succeeded as the 7th Baronet Gordon, of Haddo, co. Aberdeen [S., 1642] on 14 December 1860. He succeeded as the 5th Viscount of Formartine on 14 December 1860. He succeeded as the 5th Lord Haddo, Methlick, Tarves and Kellie on 14 December 1860. He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Gordon of Aberdeen, co. Aberdeen on 14 December 1860.
