Obituary in Union Star, April 7, 1893, page 1:
George W. Hammer died March 18, 1893, at 7 o'clock, at his father-in-law, Saturday morning. He was born near Newton, Jasper County, Iowa, on June 26, 1866. He was the youngest son of Seth and Elizabeth Hammer. He was kind and affectionate to his parents and all whom he met with. He left home when about fourteen years old to try and make a living for himself, his parents being dead at that time. Mr. Hammer went in for a few years to Ft. Dodge from Des Moines, where he found a position on the railroad, where he remained about five years. He then came to Union, Iowa, and was married to Miss Charlotte Rash on January 29th, 1887. She was a noble good-hearted lady and was well thought of. Mr. Hammer leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss.
For the past two years his health had been failing and on Feb. 15, 1892, he started for Cannon, Colorado, where he remained about five months and then returned to Union, with no change for the better, and upon hearing that Mrs. Charles Kindley, of Burlington, had received much benefit, and a number of others who were doing well in the Infirmary, he concluded to give that institution a trial. On the 17th of January he went to Burlington and began the treatment there. He remained several weeks when the doctor told him he had better return home and rest a few weeks and if he felt any better then to come back. But he only lived three weeks after he came back. He stood his sickness well, and often said he was ready to go at his Master's call. He was a member of the Friends church.
The funeral was conducted by Charles Kindley, whom he put so much confidence in while at Burlington. His last words were, "God be with you till we meet again."
We want to express our sincere thanks to friends who so kindly assisted through the sickness, death and burial of our husband and brother.
