Her father was GEORGE LANPHEAR [6], many spellings, probably from French L’Ame-Fiere.

George was a grandson of Huguenots [Huguenot = a French Protestant of the 1500 and 1600s, believed Calvinist or Reformed theology]. His grandfather THOMAS LANPHEAR [4] fled France following the massacre on the Eve of St. Bartholomew.

GEORGE [6] immigrated from England to America.

George LAMPHERE (LANPHEAR, LANPHERE) was born 1631 in Berkshire, England. He is reportedly the grandson of Thomas Lamphier, a Huguenot.

In 1669 he purchased land from John Clarke in Westerly, R.I.

In 1671 he took the oath of allegiance in R.I.

In 1678 he was baptized at the "waterside at the mill."

In Jul 1704 he had 200 acres laid out.

In 1727, he was judged incapable of managing his affairs and his land was divided among his children.

George died 6 Oct 1731 Westerly, RI.

He was married to Jane HULET of Westerly, RI by whom he had nine children.

Second Generation

The children of George Lanphere and Jane Hulet were:

(1) Mary LANPHERE born 9 Nov 1668 Westerly, Washington, RI. She married to Peter BUTTON (1660-). She was living in 1727. She was the mother of Peter, Mary, Matthias, Eliphall, Jedediah, Samuel, Cyrus, Joseph and Elizabeth Button.

(2) Shadrach LANPHERE was born 1674 Westerly, RI. He died 29 Jan 1728 in Stonington, CT. He married 15 Feb 1675 Norwich, CT to Experience READ, daughter of Josiah Read and Grace Holloway. She married second 23 Feb 1732 to Samuel Lincoln. A deed dated 23 Feb 1732 between Samuel Lincoln and Experience his wife, formerly the widow of Shadrach Lanphere of Stonington, names his eight youngest children.

(3) Patience LANPHERE was born circa 1675-80 Westerly, RI. She married about 1704 to Eber CRANDALL (1676-1727), the son of John Crandall and Hannah Gaylord, as his second wife.

(4) Seth LANPHERE was born 1677/8 Westerly, RI. He died circa 1725. He married at Newport, RI to Sarah PENDLETON (1693-1725) daughter of Caleb Pendleton. Their known children were: William, Aaron, Miriam, Elizabeth, Mary, Briant, Ann, Elisha, and Isaac Lanphere.

(5) John LANPHERE was born circa 1683. He married to Ruth. His will was made 31 Mar 1730 and proved 30 May 1757 at Westerly, RI. His children were John, Daniel, Amos, Experience, Ruth, Nathan, Mary, Keziah, Anna and Patience Lanphere.

(6) Theodosius LANPHERE was born about 1685 Westerly, RI. He made his will 5 Feb 1737, proved 27 Mar 1749 Westerly, RI. He married 22 Jan 1708 Westerly to Rachel COVEY (1689-1760) the daughter of Hope and Mary Covey. His children were: Theodosius, James, Joshua, Abigail, Susanna, Nathaniel, Mary, Samuel, Stephen, Jabez, and Joseph Lanphere.

(7) Sarah LANPHERE was born 1 Mar 1687 Westerly, RI. She married 21 Mar 1707/8 Westerly to James COVEY, son of Hope Covey. Their children were: Sarah, Mary, Hope, James, John, Joseph, Samuel, Elisha, and Elizabeth Covey.

(8) Elizabeth LANPHERE was born 1689 Westerly, RI. She married Jan 1709/10 Westerly, RI to James PENDLETON, son of Caleb Pendleton. Their children were James, Obadiah, Christopher and Elizabeth Pendleton.

 George was the grandson of Thomas Lanphere. He first moved to England, then on  to Mass. in 1640's or 50's. Shortly there after he moved to Westerly, Rhode Island. In 1669 he bought land. He came from a well to do family. George was a member of the Sabbatarian church.

Died at 100 yrs∼George's birth date is unknown but may be approximately 1638. George was the son of Richard & Averina Lamphere of London and arrived in America prior to 1665, when his father's will mentioned that George was located in New England, and in Westerly by 1669 when he obtained land from John Clark (mentioned in a deed from 1721). The name of his wife is unknown, and her origins, but they had 9 children.
