About George Lane, of Hingham
IMPORTANT NOTE: GEORGE LANE OF MASSACHUSETTS WAS NEVER MARRIED TO OLIVE EATON OF THE EASTERN SHORE, VIRGINIA/MARYLAND.
Vital Information
George Lane was one of the early town planters of Hingham, Massachusetts. George's exact birth location is England is unknown, as is the year of his birth. Some on-line genealogical pages list him as being born in 1612 in Norfolk, England, while others list him as being born around 1613 in Beaminster, Dorset, England, but there are no apparent records for either date or location.
The christened name of George's wife was Sarah; she died in Hingham on March 26, 1694-95. All of his children -- Sarah, Hannah, Josiah, Susanna, Elizabeth, John, Ebenezer, Mary, and Peter -- were born or baptized in Hingham.
Arrival in America
William Lane (George's father) and his wife and family are listed as passengers on the Hopewell, with Mr. John Driver as master, bound from Weymouth, England to Massachusetts Bay, departing on May 6, 1635. The ship’s passenger list names 18 men, but does not list the names of their wives, children or servants. Burton Spear, in Vol. 20 of his Search for the Passengers of the Mary and John, deduced that George was among the children on this voyage based on existing records from the time.
Home in Hingham
On September 18, 1635, a house-lot of five acres was granted to George at the first distribution of land on Twon (Town?)/North St., near Beal Street. He also had a grant of ten acres at "Nutty Hill," and thirteen shares in the common lands.
"Nutty Hill" survives as a street name in Hingham, but it is unclear if the street is the site of Nutty Hill or merely named in tribute to it. The original Nutty Hill is described in records as being near Fresh River, West Bridge, and Hobart Street.
His homestead was given to his son Ebenezer and stayed in the family for at least four generations.
Other Information
George's listed occupation in his will was that of shoemaker; his son John also took up this occupation in town and was also constable in 1689. In addition, he was a Hingham selectman in 1669 and 1678. He was granted silver in his father's will, proved July 6, 1654 in Hingham.
George died June 11, 1689, with his will proved August 20.
NOTE: He should not be confused with his great-grandson, Capt. George Lane. On-line genealogical pages listing this George Lane as a ship captain are inaccurate.
