Note: it was the personal research of Shirley Thompson Craft, licensed genealogist, and descendant of George Campbell, as well as book author on her ancestors, who discovered in the summer of 2011 that this George Campbell 1720-1791 had originated in Caroline County, Virginia before moving into the area of Piney River, Amherst County, Virginia. Shirley Thompson Craft has been instrumental in groundbreaking discoveries, based on court documents and evidence which formed the basis of understanding about who the ancestors of George Campbell were.

Order Books of Caroline and printed in the book, Colonial Caroline: A History of Caroline County, Virginia by T. E. Campbell:

1749 - George Campbell decedent; James Campbell exec. or adm. - This is the man assumed to be the father of our George (m. Caty) Virginia Davis made this assumption and we Campbell Kids seems to agree.

1751 - Sarah Campbell decedent; William Campbell exec. or adm. - Sarah is the widow of John Cammel. Who is this William? If we estimate Sarah was 14 years old when she married Patrick Cammel in 1691, she would have been 74 years old when she died.

1753 - William Campbell decedent; George Campbell, Jr. exec. or adm. - Is this William the one who administered Sarah's estate? We know it can't be William who migrated to Amherst. George Campbell, Jr. is probably our George who migrated to Amherst. Remember George sold land in 1753 to Deshazo. Was George, Jr. the son the William or of the George who died in 1749? Being called Jr. in those days did not necessarily mean you were the son of George Sr.

just George, the younger. The Order Book for 1752-1754 (page 372 - dated Dec 16 1752)show William's estate was sold by the sheriff "Robert Jackson v. estate of William Campbell; judgment for plaintiff in amount of 3 pounds; The sheriff attached a parcel of fodder & tobacco in the hands of George Campbell. The sheriff was empowered to see the goods."

The biography for Samuel Campbell is empty. What can you add?

The earliest records show George Campbell living in Albemarle county, Virginia. About 1761, he moved his family to Amherst County, VA and owned 480 acres in the Piney River area. When Nelson County was formed from Amherst, that 480 acres then became known as both counties as the river divides the two counties. Most of George's descendants remained in Virginia but some did move away.

Other surnames associated with this line are Goode, Wright, Cash, and Hudson. It is speculated that he may be the son of a Charles Campbell who came to Virginia from Ireland, accumulated his wealth here and then moved back to Ireland where he married, had children and died. It is speculated that his son George Campbell came back to Virginia, settled his estate in Virginia and remained.
