  1. Ambrose Campbell married three times.

His first wife was Nancy Gillespie, married 2 Jul 1799 in Amherst County, Virginia.

  1. He married his second wife Jenny or Jane Witt in Estill County, Kentucky on 27 Dec 1810.

Ann and
John
were children of Ambrose and Jenny/Jane. On 19 July 1817

  1. Ambrose married Rhoda Chittum in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

Their children were

  • Rhoda,
  • Elsie,
  • Frances "Fannie",
  • George ,
  • Catherine,
  • Sarah and
  • an unnamed infant who presumably died at birth with his/her mother Rhoda in 1826

According to family lore:
Ambrose and Rhoda owned a large farm near Roanoke, Va.

A man wanted to borrow money for a store and asked Ambrose for a loan. Ambrose secured the loan with his farm. The man's store failed and Ambrose lost his farm.

When Ambrose's father died, he inherited more tracts of land, but due to bad management, he lost all.

Ambrose, Rhoda, and his family moved in a covered wagon to Franklin County, West Jefferson village, Ohio in 1823 or 1824. In Ohio, Ambrose used two horses to put in the crop and had a good crop.

However, Rhoda died in 1826 with her newborn child after their first year in Ohio.

Ambrose was left with 8 children to raise.

Two years later, Ambrose contracted Malaria and died, leaving the children orphans.

The children were taken in by a woman they called Mama Strader who looked after them until they were self-sufficient.
---------------------------
Nancy was born in about 1779 in Amherst Co., VA?. She was the daughter of George Gillaspie and Mary (Moore) Gillaspie.

When Nancy was about 20 she married on 2 July 1799 in Amherst Co., VA.

The source of the death date of 1814 for Nancy comes from the Augusta Co, VA court documents for Henry Shultz, and this information was found personally by {Campbell-2991 / Sam Campbell } .

Research Notes
In conclusion, there is a strong case for Ambrose Campbell and Nancy Gillaspie to be the parents of Fountain, Ellis, and Dicey. The family story goes something like this: Ambrose marries Nancy, they have several children, and she dies young, leaving small kids. Ambrose sends the kids to the Gillaspie family, his in-laws, and also the Shultz family gets involved, and the kids are raised up. Dicey remains in the area and marries. But the 2 boys leave the area and have lives away from Amherst Co VA. Ambrose re-marries and moves to Ohio and dies there, and his Ohio children may not have corresponded with their half-siblings. Everyone was in their own world and far apart.

We know that Fountain and Ellis match dna closely (on male Campbell dna). We know that Fountain and Gillaspie's dna match closely (in the random dna which is not just male). There is no other marriage between any “George and Caty” descendant, and a “George Gillespie” descendant, who could produce a Fountain Campbell in 1803. This is the only possible choice: Ambrose and Nancy.

NOTE: 1812 is incorrect. The "2" in 1812 looks both like a "0" and a "2"!!! The entry was written in 1811, the actual marriage date was 1810.
