<nowiki>---------------------------------------------------------------</nowiki> Emil Hermann came with his parents to the US and they made their way to the west, Wisc or Dakota I believe. They had come to the US from Prussia as political refugees. That part of Europe was very unstable at that time. Now the area is part of eastern Germany. They stayed there a short while and then the family moved to Manitoba. That is where he met and married Mary. In the late 1800’s after the Grand Trunk Railway was constructed, it opened up the west for settlement. The Canadian government was very anxious to populate the west so they gave free land to all who applied. Like a lot of other Canadians the Shaws/Hermann nearly all went west. Georgie’s sister Minnie (Hannah Almedia) moved to Regina and rented an apartment or room there. Apparently as soon as Georgie was old enough she moved to Regina and in one census I found her living with Minnie. The Hermanns lived nearby so it seems that is how they met. Some of Georgie’s siblings went west also. Verner lived in Manitoba, Clarence and Percy ended up in Saskatchewan. Minnie lived in Manitoba for a while but ended up in Victoria, British Columbia. My grandfather went across the river in 1898 and settled on a farm in NY only about 15 miles from his home in Leeds, Ontario. William stayed in Gananoque and had a farm near the cemetery. Robert Bruce stayed and inherited the farm at Marble Rock. Clifford stayed in Gananoque town.
