About Geraldine Helena Winder/Hayward

After her sister Marian's death, Geraldine did not approve of John (Crozier) marrying Jessie and told him so In a letter written to him in Jan 1908, saying he was marrying far beneath himself. She called John 'Jack'. She lived at Goudar Gardens, West Hampstead, New York. During the trial she lived with Helena Hayward, 90c Fordwych Rd, Hampstead, London. After the trial she took over the care of her nephew and niece George Amar Lucan and Helena Inez. She may have taken them to live near family in Dublin, or to America. Her husband was a Solicitor.

The letter goes as follows: Jan. 7, 1908. My dear Jack, I am very sorry indeed to hear of you approaching marriage with Jessie Staples. It is not at all that I disapprove of your marrying again: that it is only quite natural and what anyone would expect. But marrying so much beneath yourself and the children is doing them a grievous injury which they will not be slow to recognise when they grow up. It is, in fact, committing social suicide. You are the last man I could have imagined marrying anyone in that class of life, as you always made so much of good family. Of course, it's no business of mine but I can't help feeling it very much for the sake of the children, knowing well how it will injure them. It occurs to me that Miss Staples will not care to have all the boxes etc belonging to George and Tissy, which you are at present taking charge of any longer in the house. I think therefore it will be best to have all George's property sent over to me, as I am responsible for it, and to have Tizzy's plate and china also sent over and put in the London & County Bank, where the stock certificates are. The remainder of her things, I think, had better be sent to Hill in Dublin and sold, and the proceeds invested in her behalf. If you agree to this, I can make out a list of what should be sent over here and what sold, as I have a complete list of all the things you have in your care. Jack bids me thank you very much for the book you sent him: he would write himself, but has not been well, and is not allowed to write at present. I hope all the children are well. Give my love to them Yours affectionately, Geraldine Hayward.
