About Gerda Brentani
Gerda Eltbogen born in Trieste Italy 1906. Her father was from Vienna and her mother,though born in Trieste, was originally from Stuttgart. The maternal grandfather, Naphtali Nördlinger has an important role in the education of his granddaughter teaching her classic literature, which she reads in German. Her formal training includes the study of languages , ballet lessons and piano. In 1926, she received a diploma in piano at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Triest. The young Gerda escaped the formality of her grandfathers education in the company of friends in Trieste: a surrealist painter Leonor Fini, Leo Krauss (later famous as the New York art dealer Leo Castelli) and the art historian and professor Gillo Dorfles.Gerda married Sigismund (Sigi) Brentan i in 1928, both were dressed in mourning because of the recent death of relatives.In 1929, her daughter Eugenia was born, dubbed Gini by Leo Castelli, at the time of one of the first visits. In 1937 her son Ricardo Renzo was born. Gerda published the book Storielle Allegre di Gerdolin ( Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazione, 1937), illustrated with stories she writes to her daughter, then 8 years old. Gerda Brentani arrived in Sao Paulo in April 1939 with her husband and two young children
