About Gerrit Nieuwoudt

Isaak NIEWOUDT was from Amsterdam, he came to the Cape in 1716. He was a soldier and surgeon. He got married 6 February 1724 to Johanna van Wyk she was the daughter of Willem van Wijk/Wyk and Trijntje Harmensz.

Johanna [Anna] van Wijk had a son born from Gerrit Willemse, but when she married Isaac Niewoudt, he adopted Gerrit Willemse, who then took on the surname of Nieuwoudt, whereafter Gerrit Nieuwoudt's descendants took on the Nieuwoudt surname.

Gerrit Niewoudt (Willemse) was baptised 2 May 1717, X 26 April 1739 (For the purposes of next of kin, adopted children are treated as blood relatives. However, relatives by marriage are never considered next of kin.)
