Gideon van Eck (1962 - 2022)

Brief overview:

Gideon (60) from farm Bakenkop, outside Kariega in the Eastern Cape, was shot dead on Sunday 13th November 2022. He was found in the doorway to the couple’s bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head.

The exact details of what happened are still unclear at this stage, but Gideon's wife was arrested, then released. It is believed the couple had an argument shortly before the incident.

  • "The case was not placed on the court roll and van Eck's wife was released before her appearance," said police spokesperson Capt. Andre Beetge.
  • Although a case of murder has been filed by the police in Uitenhage, the senior state prosecutor said the case requires further investigation before a suspect can be brought to court.
  • "As soon as the investigation progresses sufficiently, the dossier will be returned to the public prosecutor. It will then be decided whether prosecution should be instituted."
  • 10/10/2023: "Her trial was set to commence on 10 October. When she was in the dock on Tuesday, the State said she needed to hand her cellphone to the investigating officer. The data on her and her husband's cellphones have to be analysed and investigated before the trial can begin. Van Eck agreed to hand over her cellphone. Van Eck told police that she had acted in self-defence.
