About Gillibert MacGoisdealbh

Second photo above showing Gilbert as witness with the Great John De Courcy in 1193, in the Ormond Deeds, along with Lord John of Mortain, future King John of Magna Carta fame.

Gausslyn /Jocelyn was awarded Navan , Ardbracken and Ardsallagh in Meath and is considered the founder of the town of Navan. He re erected St Marys Monastery there. His son Eminent historian Edmund Curtis in Gael and Norman in Irish History, 1911, wrote:” Already , in 1193 one Gilbert de Angulo or Nangle, called by the Irish MacGoisdealbh, or son of Jocelyn, had entered Crovdergs service, in which he became a gallant “ condottiere”, and founded the Clan of MacCostelloe

“Gilbert 1, was granted Ratoath, Morgallion and Nobber, also in Meath, beside Navan, where he built palisades and then Castles. William was granted Tullow and Ardee, in Carlow. Gilbert 2, was the ffirst Norman to colonize Connacht , erecting a mote and Bailey and then a castle at Rathgorgin, the frontier of the land granted to him by Crovderg in 1195. This area of Maenmagh was eventually controlled by Jordan De Angulo, youngest son of Gilbert, whose son Gilbert Fitz Jordan was in possession of this land 1250, as a Knight under The De Birmingham’s of Loughrea, who in turn were Leige Lords to the Burke’s of Galway town and Athenry.

The tower houses in these towns were identical to Angle Castle in Pembrokeshire. These Norman families were all intermarried, and also married into the Gaelic Clans that never left their ancestral lands, ever. The De Angulos were mainly Castle designers and builders, built over 30 in their land holdings, as well as monasteries and abbeys.

They were the founders of the School of the West Architectural design palet prominent from 1300’s to 1450’s including Devinish Island, Ballyhaunis Abbey, Urlaur Abbey, Templehouse in Sligo, and many more castles. Castlemore was there h.q.. Athanchip, Mannin, Rathnaguppaun, Kilcolman, Dunmore, Moygara and many more Castles were their designs if not their family residences.

The original Castle in Angle Pembrokeshire is a Grade 1 historic property in Britain, only one of its kind in Wales, and the prototype of all Irish Three and four storey Tower Houses built after 1175. Take a look online, the similarity of design is obvious, and I am a Master mason by trade, the constructions are definitely the same including local streams to fill the moats.

There is one other unique architectural feature that the De Angulos brought to Ireland that proves their pedigree in these castles, but that’s for later .
Gilbert and brothers did not rebel, their Leige lord was King Richard the Lion Heart, and as such they ddi not back Lord John and his palace coup against the Lionheart, wen Richard was still On Crusade in Tripoli.
Wiki below never has the deatils, just cick and aste garbage.

Gilbert assisted the Bishop John Grey in Building Cael Uisce, aka Running water, near Ballyshannon, again wiki is wrong about the details.

"Gilbert de Angulo was an Anglo-Norman knight, fl. 1195–1213." (Wikipedia, 2022a).

"A son of Jocelyn de Angulo, 1st Baron of Navan, Gilbert held the barony of Machaire Gaileng (Morgallion and Ratoath). Upon his rebellion in 1195 all his lands were forfeited - given by Walter de Lacy to his brother, Hugh, about 1198 - and Gilbert and his brothers Phillip and William outlawed." (Wikipedia, 2022a).

"Gilbert fled English jurisdiction and sought service with King Cathal Crobhdearg Ua Conchobair of Connacht. In return, Cathal granted him lands at Máenmaige, in western Uí Maine. Upon his pardon in 1206, King John of England confirmed him in lands granted by King Cathal and made him a grant of other lands. Brought back into John's favour, he assisted Cathal in the construction of Caeluisce, near Ballyshannon, in 1212. It was attacked and burned the following year, Gilbert being killed during the attack.", "...slain in the castle of Cael-uisge; and the castle itself was burned by O'Hegny." (Wikipedia, 2022a; Wikipedia, 2022b).

"Jocelyn's son Gilbert de Angulo, the 2nd Baron, rebelled against King John I in 1195. He was attainted and his estates declared forfeit to the Crown; but he was later pardoned by King John. He was killed in a skirmish in 1212 or 1213." (Wikipedia, 2022b). This is from my Wiki talk, they are starting to learn who knows what!!

"Gilbert also appears to have held land in Uí Lomain and Cineal Fheicin/Muntir Mailfinnain. However, as all his lands were held by new owners subsequent to Richard Mor de Burgh's settlement of Connacht in the 1230s, it appears his family had by then died out in the male line." (Wikipedia, 2022a). Need reference, this is not supported by official docs from Tower of London, and is not true at all, Phillip 2 was Gilberts son, he had castles in Cavan and Fermanagh, both Philp OReilly 1300's and Philip Maguire were decendants of his, Philip name was from his daughters who married into these familys. Philp was a Cambro Norman first name, like Gilbert , Ricahrd, Jordan and Miles were.

"Some of Gilbert's descendants altered the names from D'Angulo to Nangle, and the branch of the family which settled near Mallow, County Cork, further changed the name to Nagle. The surname "Costello" is derived from Gilbert's second son, Hostilo. As such, descendants of Costello became "MacCostello"." (Wikipedia, 2022a). Hostilo does not exist at all, no record of him whatso ever. Made up by Carew in 1530, copied from then on.
This is also not factual, it was made up by Carew and copied by Cotton to distance themselves from the Nangle and a Nagle clans, as well as MacCostelloe clan, to distance their family’s from the last Catholic Baronial family, the MacCostelloes.

"William was an Anglo-Irish knight, fl. 1195–1206, and son of Jocelyn de Angulo. William was associated with the rebellion of his brothers Gilbert and Philip in 1195, and likewise pardoned in 1206. He held lands in Meath under Walter de Lacy which were returned to him upon his pardon. He is the ancestor of the Mac Jordan Duff, Mac Phillip, de Bhaldraithe/Mac Bhaldrin/Waldron clans of County Mayo." (Wikipedia, 2022a).
Williams land was never in Meath, that’s Gilbert Mor and Gausslyn land.

"William de Angulo, [was the] 3rd Baron of Navan" (Wikipedia, 2022b).also wrong, wiki loves to source themselves as a source, that’s how they compound their mistakes.Gilbert was second, Phillip was Third.
William had returned to Angle by this point.

I have Posted actual records from Calender of Docs relating to Ireand under their names on this tree, stop posting Wiki garbage please, in is a wokesters dumpster. From Cambridge.org Document of Settlement re St Thomas Abbey Dublin, and Ardmulchan Church in Navan.

William De Angulo granted , Carlow by Richard Fitzgilbert, or Strongbow, 1172.witnessed by Gilbert Walter and Jordan De Angulo, his brothers, and meyler Fitzhenry, Raymond le Gross.

William in turn witnessed:

Charter Of Adam de Cursun confirming land in Dublin with witnesses Strongbow, Raymond le Gross(Fitzgerald) and Jocelyn de Angulo, so the De Angulo were very well connected.

Many Ormond deeds mention the De Angulo brothers as witnessing the 1170 and 1180’s, charters.
Charter of Earl John 1188, future King John, with William and Gilbert as witnesses,

Most importantly the Charter of John De Courcy, for the Abbey of Navan founded by Jocelyn de Angulo, witnessedby William and Gilbert once again. The order of the witness always implies rank, William is always first of the names, Gilbert always second.

This implies William was the oldest son, and more than likely in charge of the Welsh Angle town land and port in the Milford Haven , Wales holdings where the Invasion of Ireland was staged from, and the De Angulo controlled in Angle, Pembrokeshire. In fact, in 1192, Alicia de Angulo and husband Jordan of Louth were in charge of Williams original Louth grant.

William granted tithes from the Land of Gillicuman to St Thomas Dublin in the Register of St Thomas Abbey.
In 1207, Dec 5, Now King John ordered Meyler Fitzhenry to see that the peace negotiated between himself, Walter de Lacy, and William and Phillip De Angulo, brother of William, was to be strictly observed,

In 1214 William gave the King 300 marks to enfeoff his land in Meath back, that Walter de Lacy had willed to his own son, but was originally Gilberts land in Meath.

King John ordered the Justiciar to provide an exchange of Lands, this was Tir Bruin , Lough Ochter, and and the lakes area in Cavan . This was the area that the OReilys Cranogg fortress’ were traditionally built and William Erected present day Parkes Castle here

This is evidence again showing how the De Angulo would marry into clans to consolidate grants of land, once the power of the Norman Knights was accepted by the Gaelic Lords.

They realized it was better to join with the new Norman invaders than to resist and perish, be that as it was.
And to pay Phillip De Angulo, his “ dear and faithful knight “ , 10 marks annually from the Exchequer in Dublin.

William, brother Phillip, and Gilbert de Livet to the King of Connacht, Cathal Crovderg, to collect 2500 marks owed to the King of England as part of his peace settlement with Covderg, whom Gilbert De Angulo was representing.

William was also a witness along with Gilbert and Richard de Feipo, another famous Knight, to a land grant to Simon Le Poer with other witnesses John de Courcy, Richard Tyrell, in 1185. From the Charter of St Mary’s, Dublin.

One other peculiar grant was witnessed by William and brother in Ormond deeds no 22 in 1203, when Gilbert was still in serving a banishment from Hamo de Vologne as Justiciar in 1195.

The grant was to the most famous of the Norman Irish families, to Thoeblad Butler himself of all the land of Glendalogh, from Thomas, Abbot of with the fee of Arklow, included. The strange part is this was granted by King John in Marlborough, England. The payment in return was one pound of incense delivered yearly on the feats day of St Kevin, the patron of Glendalogh, delivered on the Alter at the Abbey.

As anyone who has been to Glendalough knows, it is perhaps the most beautiful place in Ireland, and that’s saying a lot.

William de Angulo also built Castlemore in Tullow, possible origin of the Castlemore in Barony of Costello built later by Miles, Williams Nephew.
Ardee Castle was built by William and his Peppard sons by his second wife, Joan Peppard. These sons were called FitWilliam Peppard, and also assisted in rebuilding a Trim Castle.

William finally built the original Kilmore Castle also in Loch Ochter, Cavan, on the land he was granted earlier in the 1175 1180 era.

William was very well regarded as shown by his place in the Second Ormond Deed grant of land as mentioned first above, he was a contemporary of all the Geraldine clan in St David’s, Wales, was witness beside the most famous Knights of the Conquest of Ireland, including William the Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. He also may have exchanged land in St David’s with Maurice Fitzgerald in Mayo, hoping to confirm with future research, but so far I have documents mentioning Ladin St Davids, where Angle is located, as belonging to a William de Castello.

If this is the same William, it would change the process of how the MacCostelloe name evolved. Since Castellum and Castellors were Latin words for castle, and since this family were Castle and War Engineers from time spent in the second crusade with the De Lacy clan , I have always thought they were known as Castelluum builders first, and MacCastullum perhaps came from that occupation.

If so , instead of a place name evolution, it was an occupation surname, a combination of both, or occupational in Wales, Place name on first arrival in Ireland, and then reverted to occupational, after reestablishing their military engineering occupation. Thoughts to consider for this amazing multi family clan.
