About Giles Slocum, Jr.

Giles moved to Dartmouth in 1669, or previous, but returned to Portsmouth before Apr. 30th, 1678 at which date he was made freeman. From 1681 he was chosen on committees and to attend to business appertaining to the Society of Friends.

He was chosen "Deputy" (the word used in R. I. In sense of Representative, until 1799) to Rhode Island General Assembly (Legislature) in 1685 and 1690. Selectman for Portsmouth 5/25/1687. Town Councilman 4/2/1690. He was "Assistant" (Colonial Senator) in 1696, ’98, 1700, ’03, ’05, ’08 and 1712. In the year 1705 he and his brother Ebenezer were chosen with Governor Cranston and others, as a committee on the part of R. I. to settle the long continued and vexatious questions of boundary line between that colony and Connecticut. He was generally chosen Moderator of Portsmouth Town Meetings and was, evidently, the most prominent man of his time in that township.

From A Short History of the Slocums, Slocumbs and Slocombs of America :

HON. GILES' SLOCUM (Giles, Anthony) was born in Portsmouth Township, Rhode Island, the 25th day of First month (March), 1647, and was married the 26th of Third Month, 1669,to Anne, daughter of Thomas Lawton of Portsmouth. He removed to Dartmouth Township, New Plymouth, in the year 1669, or before,^ and became a resident of Portsmouth, R. I., again previous to 30 April, 1678, at which date he was admitted freeman of that township. His name is connected with a number of land purchases and sales, both in Portsmouth and Dartmouth, and he is named as one of the proprietors of Dartmouth Township in the confirmatory deed of Governor William Bradford 13 November, 1694. The following entry appears among the records of Portsmouth, viz : —

" The eare marke of the Cattle of Giles Slocum Junr is A crop on the Right Ear and a halfpeney on Each side the same and A slit in the left Eare with A halfpeney under the same. Entered and Recorded the 12th of 5th month 1679 mee JOHN ANTHONY Towne Clerke."

From the year 1681 he was chosen on committees, and singly, to attend to business appertaining to the Society of Friends ; and it also appears that he was sometimes called upon to explain conduct which was declared disorderly by that Society. He was chosen the 28th day of Sixth month, 1682, " to serve on the next Grand Inquest," and again in 1685 ; was chosen Deputy from Portsmouth to the Rhode Island General Assembly (Legislature) in 1685-1690 ; Selectman for Portsmouth the 25th of Fifth month, 1687 ; Town Councilman the 2d of Fourth month, 1690, and as Assistant (Colonial Senator) in the years 1696, 1698, 1700, 1703, 1705, 1708, 1712, and Palfrey, in his History of New England, adds the years 1722 and 1723, but the Assistant for these years was perhaps his son Giles4 Slocum. In the year 1705 he and his brother Ebenezer were chosen with Governor Cranston and others, as a committee on the part of Rhode Island to settle the long continued and vexatious question of boundary line between that Colony and Connecticut. He was generally chosen Moderator of the Portsmouth Townmeetings, and was, evidently, the most prominent man of his time in that township.
