A native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Grace Annette DuPré was born in 1894 and was the daughter of Daniel Allston and Helen Capers Stevens DuPré. Early own, DuPré studied violin at Converse College and under the guidance of Victor Kolar and Alois Trinka. She briefly taught at the University of Virginia and at Gulliford College, before being hired by Peace Institute to head their violin department. DuPré later began to pursue an interest in painting, and she went on to become a well-known artist.
Throughout her career, she painted portraits of several notable figures, including President Harry S. Truman and Secretary of State John F. Byrnes. Her works were displayed throughout the country, including in the Truman Library, the Governor’s Mansion in South Carolina, and the U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago, Illinois. DuPré maintained an art studio in New York from 1942 until 1964, when she returned to Spartanburg and set up a studio there. She died in 1984.
