About Grietje Hendricks

notes

Place of birth should specifically be Ruinen, De Wolden. The family came from the village of Ruinen in Drenthe and settled in the Bouwerij.

In Carl Boyer, III's published compilation, "Ship Passenger Lists: New York and New Jersey (1600-1825)" [Westminster, MD: Family Line Publications, 1978] on page 123 is a list of people who sailed on 15 April 1660 on the ship "De Bonte Koe" (the Spotted Cow). Among them are:

  • "Focke Jansz, farmer, from Drenthe, wife, and seven children, ages 19, 17, 13, 11, 9, 3, and a nursing child."

"Through a Dutch Door: 17th-century Origins of the Van Voorhees Family", published by the Van Voorhees Family Association in 1992. In an appendix on pages 136 to 139, one hundred and eleven people are enumerated who came from the Dutch province of Drenthe to New York between the years 1651 and 1679. Among them are Focke Jans and his wife Grietie Hendricx as well as men named Jan Focken (Heermans) and Egbert Fockenszen (who might be another adult son). There is no way to tell if Grietje Hendricks is the mother of all of Focke Jans' children.
