Philly native Guion “Guy” Bluford became the first African-American in space when he traveled on Mission STS-8 aboard the shuttle Challenger on Aug. 30, 1983. He served on three more shuttle missions during his NASA career, including another aboard the Challenger only months before its launch disaster.
