About Hallie Laura McAnelly

Hallie Laura Nixon was born on August 16, 1893, in Medina County, Texas, USA. Her parents were John Phillip Nixon and Dora Ann Wilson.
Hallie married Gladden Clyde McAnelly, Sr on January 12, 1913, in Yancey, Medina, Texas, USA. Together they had the following children:
- Dora Mae McAnelly;
- Hallie Lorine McAnelly;
- John Ernest McAnelly, Sr;
- Gladden Clyde McAnelly, Junior;
- James William McAnelly;
- Charles Wayman McAnelly.
She died on May 8, 1986, in Hondo, TX, and was buried in Yancey Cemetery, Yancey, Medina, Texas, USA. [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/18003746]
The McAnelly children were very well educated, most attending college, including a very young Texas A&M. Gladden, was Valedictorian of his class in 1909 from Devine. Gladden was an excellent baseball pitcher – left-handed with a tremendous curve and great fastball. When he graduated, he was drafted by some team in the then-fledgling Major League Baseball Association. His father, P.E., told him, “A man should not be playing a boy's game,” and would not let him go. Unhappy with the decision, Gladden refused to go to college, married his childhood sweetheart, and started ranching.
Gladden and Hallie lived in a ranch home that had no inside utilities. Hallie gave birth and raised seven children. She came from one of the wealthiest families in Texas and was used to all of the conveniences, but Hallie and Gladden were proud homeowners and wanted to build their fortune themselves. They were taught to work hard as children.
Hallie was raised, on a large Texas ranch, the Texas Hill Country, people most likely thought, all the Nixon women were the typical southern debutantes.
Attending social events, and wearing the latest Paris or New York fashions the Nixon daughters did not disappoint the crowds. They were members of the Junior League, Eastern Star, and many organizations.
John Phillip Nixon decided if his children wanted to, they would attend the best prep schools, dance, music, foreign language, finishing schools, and colleges. This is where the typical debutante story ends.
The Nixon girls were on horseback herding livestock and mending fences. Many became accomplished equestrians as did their grandchildren. They also learned alongside their brothers how to manage a large ranch business.
The Nixon women could choose what profession and college degree they wanted, some decided to be homemakers and ranchers. This was the 2nd generation of our family tradition of the East Coast Prep School, Philips Exeter.
The Nixon daughters were treated equally to the Nixon sons. This was unusual for this time in history, but normal for the family for generations. They were originally from the Friend’s Religion, known as Quaker for several generations until their grandfather arrived in Texas and joined the Methodist Church.
After working on the ranch, they would come home in in the evening to dress for a formal social affair, their choice if they wanted to attend, look like a debutante. If only others at the events had seen them hours earlier roping calves, branding cattle, or cooking, cleaning beside the maids, only the Nixon women could do both successfully, and with grace.
Hallie dearly loved Gladden since she was a young girl, grew up, and married him, THis was all she wanted in life,
