According to the Sacketts of America, Hannah Sackett, daughter of Rev. Samuel Sackett and Hannah Hazard, was married in 1768 to Stephen De Lancey, from whom she secured a legal separation during the early part of the Revolutionary period. De Lancey, at the time of their marriage, was about forty years of age and the proprietor of upward of ten thousand acres of land of what had been known as Cortland Manor, and is now the town of North Salem, New York. He was from a very prominent family; being the second son of Lt. Governor James De Lancey.

When he came of age, Stephen was deeded an extensive estate, by his father, who was at the time Chief Justice of the Province of New York. At the outbreak of the Revolution, the Sacketts espoused the Patriot cause, and the De Lanceys, with equal fervor, remained loyal to King George. At one time word was brought to Rev. Samuel Sackett that his son-in-law, Stephen Le Lancey, was in close and secret communication with the British commander in the area, and that bands of Tories, led by members of the De Lancey family, were arresting and dragging off to prison any outspoken Patriots. As a direct result of this state of affairs an estrangement between the families and between Hannah Sackett and her husband led to a legal separation. On all sides respect and confidence gave way to hatred and distrust and the warmest of friends became the bitterest of enemies.

The father of Isaac Baldwin, Capt. Isaac Baldwin, was a prominent lawyer at Litchfield, Conn. For many years he was a magistrate, represented his town in the Connecticut Legilature, and was first a Lieutenant and then Captain of the Litchfield Company of Militia. Major Isaac Baldwin, his son, had studied law and at the outbreak of the War of the Revolution, was practicing his profession at Litchfield. He served on the staff of General Zebulon Butler and was made an Assistant Quartermaster General, and was serving in that capacity when he married with Hannah Sackett De Lancey. On October 16, 1779 the Rev. Samuel Sackett presided over the marriage of his daughter Hannah to Isaac Baldwin, Jr.
