Arrived on Weymouth, 15 May, 1820 as part of the Menezes party from Kent, age 9.
She became the pioneer matriarch of the Flooks family in South Africa. Her father John was part of the Menezes party made up of ex-servicemen of the British Armed Forces who had no employment at the end of the Napoleonic wars. He was listed as a labourer. The Menezes party were all “equals” who were each allocated 100 acres in the new country, unlike some of the other parties. Hannah was the eldest of seven children, one of whom was born on board the Weymouth. Records show 14 children died on board from an epidemic of measles during the voyage.
More about HMSS WEYMOUTH: It had been a supply ship during the Napoleonic wars, and thus armed with guns. It had to be adapted to transport the Settlers and was fitted out with hundreds of bunks and hammocks before taking 700 people, their belongings and provisions on board in Portsmouth, England during one of the coldest winters in memory. A lot of the Settlers were temporarily accommodated for weeks on a rusty hulk moored nearby until the alterations were completed
