From the quilt collection of Rosalie Angel:
Temperance Quilt: Identified by the distinctive "T" pattern and named for the Temperance Movement. The Temperance Movement was known for its efforts to curb alcohol use in the early 1900s because of the part alcohol played in spousal and child abuse. The brown fabric used in this quilt is from Margaret (Mars) Badger (1821-1877) given to her daughter, Hannah (Badger) Miller (1853-1933). Hannah Miller and her sisters pieced the quilt. It was quilted by Hannah's daughter, Irma (Miller) Ellis (1893-1975). Irma was an active believer in the Temperance Movement. We used to think of the Temperance ladies as "spoil-sports" who didn't like alcohol. We now recognize the part the Temperance Movement has played in trying to reduce spousal and child abuse.
Flower Basket Quilt: Pieced and quilted by Hannah (Badger) Miller for her granddaughter, Clara (Ellis) Miles (1922-2007). Hannah made quilts for each of her grandchildren.
