About Harriet ('Harriott') Farnell
Biographical Notes
Harriet Farnell, wife of John Wilson Farnell and mother of John Edward, Henry Dawson, Mary Louis and Richard Lewis Farnell, was recorded: christened 'Harriet Pritchard born in the Parish -Priory Church of St. Thomas, Upholland' daughter of John Pritchard, Excise Officer and Harriett Pritchard in October 1816. Refer to the Census of 1871 for Camden and Marriage Certificate relating to the marriage in 1845 of John Wilson Farnell to Harriet at Burcombe -Wilton, Salisbury, Wiltshire -then recording her father's name 'John Pritchard' and occupation again as 'Excise Officer'. Other records for Pritchard & Brown families confirm Mary Ann Pritchard, Harriet's older sister, married Richard Brown at St. Mary's Parish Church in Fordingbridge in 1836. ° So, then, began was a long established family link. ° Richard and Mary Ann lived at 'The Furlong' Ringwood. Richard Brown signed as one of the witnesses recorded at the Burcombe wedding of John Wilson Farnell and Harriet Pritchard -his signature recognisable from documents held in the National Archives at Kew -when Clerk to the Board of Guardians, Ringwood Union, regularly writing to the Office of the Poor law Commissioners in London.° Sarah Pritchard -Harriet's sister [married name 'Crowder'] also witnessed the wedding. ° In the Census of 1851, Sarah Pritchard was living with the Brown family in Ringwood. There are secondary sources of information assisting in the Farnell-Brown-Pritchard family link; supported by Probates -U.K. Calendar of Probate & Estate of Administration Entries; (i) for Richard Brown's Probate Grant in September 1871, where John Wilson Farnell applied for probate in on belief of his Estate the Central Registry, London but with Richard Brown's Executor authorised by the Probate Court to administer his estate being Harriet's father, John Pritchard, then retired from the Excise Service; also, then, (ii) the given names for one of Richard and Mary Ann's sons, Charles Farnell -Brown. Furthermore, when John Wilson Farnell died in 1874, a resident of Camden Town, George Pritchard, Harriet's brother, a commercial bank manager of London & County Bank was appointed sole Executor to his estate. George Pritchard, himself, had , newly married, once resided in College Street, Camden Town. In September 1856 he and his wife, Frances Pritchard were residents of No 117 College Street. Sadly according to her death Certificate - for which see profile, she died at that address on September 5th 1856. This array of facts during a lengthy period provides clear circumstantial evidence, of a close inter-family link, over three decades. The weight of evidence balances the Pritchard-Brown-Farnell connection.
