About Harriet ('Harriott') Farnell

Biographical Notes
Harriet (in records as 'Harrietta' & alternative spellings) Farnell, wife of John Wilson Farnell and mother of John Edward, Henry Dawson, Mary Louis and Richard Lewis Farnell, was recorded as: christened 'Harriet Pritchard born in the Parish -Priory Church of St.Thomas, Upholland', daughter of John Pritchard, Excise Officer and of Harriett Pritchard in October 1816. Refer to the Census of 1871 for Camden and Marriage Certificate relating to the marriage in 1845 of John Wilson Farnell to Harriet at Burcombe -Wilton, Salisbury, Wiltshire -then recording her father's name 'John Pritchard' and occupatio, an 'Excise Officer'. Other records for Pritchard & Brown families give, Mary Ann Pritchard, Harriet's older sister, married Richard Brown of Ringwood at St. Mary's Parish Church in Fordingbridge in 1836. ° So, then, emerged what was to be another family link between Farnells & Browns. ° Richard and Mary Ann lived at 'The Furlong' Ringwood. Richard Brown signed a witness to the Burcombe wedding of John Wilson Farnell and Harriet Pritchard -his signature recognisable on documents held in the National Archives at Kew - in his role as Clerk to the Board of Guardians, Ringwood Union, regularly corresponding with the Poor law Commissioners in London.° Sarah Pritchard -Harriet's sister [married name 'Crowder'] witnessed the wedding too. ° With the Census of 1841 and then 1851, Sarah was living with the Brown family in Ringwood. There are wider sources confirming the close family -Farnell-Pritchard link, but with the Ringwood 'Browns'; supported by Probates -U.K. Calendar of Probate & Estate of Administration Entries; (i) for Richard Brown's Probate Grant in September 1871, where John Wilson Farnell applied for probate in on belief of Richard Brown's Estate in the Central Registry, London & Richard Brown's Executor authorised by the Probate Court in administering his estate as Harriet's father, John Pritchard, then retired from Excise Service; also, (ii) the given name for one of Richard and Mary Ann's sons, Charles Farnell -Brown, who was living in Ironbridge in 1871 with his aunt Sarah (Pritchard) then married to Stanley Crowder. When John Wilson Farnell died in 1874, a resident of Camden Town, George Pritchard, Harriet's brother, a commercial bank manager of London & County Bank was sole Executor to his estate. George Pritchard, himself, had, newly married (his wife, Frances Grugeon), in Sept. 1856 lived at 117 College Street, Camden Town & from her death Certificate - for which see profile, she died at that address on September 5th 1856.
