About Heinrich Julius Ferdinand Pautz

Son of Karl August Ferdinand Gotthilf Pautz and Friederike Sophie Wilhelmine Hannemann.

Heinrich was awarded the South Africa Medal with 1877-8 Clasp. The medal features the Wyon profile of Queen Victoria on the front and a British lion drinking at a waterhole beside a protea shrub, a Zulu shield and four crossed assegais being in the exergue. It was awarded to Royal Navy, Army and Colonial Units who took part in operations against: The Galekas and Gaikas, 26th September 1877 - 28th June 1878. Chief Pokwane, 21st - 28th January 1878. The Griiquas 24th April - 13th November 1878. The Zulus, under Cetewayo and his Lieutenants, 11th January - 2nd December 1879. Chief Sekukuni, 11th November - 2nd December 1879. Chief Moorosi in the Drakensberg Mountains, 25th March - 20th November 1879.

A document in the Public Record Office, London (Wo 100 /48, p.261) indicates that Heinrich Pautz, a Private in the German Burgher Contingent, engaged the "Gaikas, Galekas and other Kafir tribes" on horseback between 1877 and 1878. Another document in the Public Record Office, London (Wo 100 /50, p.312) reveals that Heinrich did not bother to collect his medal and that it was returned to England. In total 40 of the South Africa Medals with 1877-8 Clasp were issued and 16 were returned unclaimed. Heinrich's brother Carl was also awarded the medal, but did make the effort to collect it.
