Emilie Auguste Sophie Pautz was born in 1856 in Wisbu, Pomerania, Prussia, the daughter of Carl Ferdinand Gotthilf Pautz and Sophie Luisa Golbeck.
In 1858 they emigrated with her 6 brothers and sisters on the ship La Rochelle to British Kaffraria, East London, South Africa where they settled as farmers in Braunschweig.
In 1875 she married Wilhelm Friedrich Peter in the Lutheran Church in Braunschweig. They had two sons, Ferdinand Peter born in 1876 and Wilhelm Peter born in 1878. Her husband Wilhelm was killed during the Ninth Xhosa Frontier war in May 1878, one month before Wilhelm was born.
In 1879 Emilie married Johann Wilke from the British German Legion who was given a grant of land in Cambridge or Panmure part of East London. They had 4 children, Auguste, Hermann, Heinrich and Wilhelmina.
Emilie married her third husband Carl Friedrich Hempel in 1910, who had a farm in King William's Town. He was the brother of Christian Friedrich Hempel, who was married to Emilie's sister Auguste. There were no children from this marriage.
