Hekkie Barnard (1938 – 2012)
Brief overview:
Hekkie (74) was shot dead on his brother Nico's Farm Geluk. He was shot three times from behind when he was trying to run away from his attackers - in the back of the head, shoulder and back. The following is the Barnard's horrific story of murder and torture of two families living at Farm Geluk on 29th November 2012. Nico was shot in the stomach. Their 94-year-old mother, Maria, was beaten around her head, and burned with a hot pan which Nico had been using to cook breakfast with. Nico's son, Nico Jnr was stabbed twice with a knife. Nico was moved to Ga-Rankuwa Hospital and operated on. Hekkie and Nico's brother, Johan, said that Nico was making breakfast when he heard the dogs barking. He opened the door and was immediately shot in the stomach.
Before the attack on Hekkie, Nico and Maria, the perpetrators invaded the home of Hekkie's son, Adam (40), who lives in a house on the same farm with his wife, Daleen, and his two son's, Adam Jnr and Jaco. They were all tied up and assaulted. Adam was tortured and burned on his thighs with a hot clothing iron. Their phones, laptops and money were stolen.

- The robbers had first attacked Barnard's great-grandchild, Adam (40), who lives in a second home on the farm, and attacked his family. Adam, his wife, Daleen, and his two children, Adam jr. and Jaco, was assaulted and tied up. Adam was burned on the thigh with an iron.

- Two weeks later Gerhard Rudolph (65), was shot 4 times, outside his butchery on his smallholding in Brits, on 14th December 2012. Four gunmen invaded Geluk Butchery/Superette. His son Gerrie Rudolph (31), was shot 6 times, and was taken to the ER at a Pretoria hospital. Gerrie died in hospital on 28th December due to his injuries.
