Helen Hall

Helen Warren, born about 1527 in Bassingbourn, Cambridge, England, was the daughter of Richard Warren and his wife Alice, and sister to a brother also named Richard Warren.

"Helen Warren or Waller, b. ca. 1529, m. (1) John Foote, (2) 19 Jan. 1558/9 John Hall (see TAG 54:100). Her son John Foote was named in the will of her brother Richard Warren," [7] and also according to George E. McCraken, in Nathaniel Foote's English Relatives (TAG 53:193).

“Helen married 2nd, on 19 Jan 1558 in England, to John Hall Sgt trumpeter to Queen Elizabeth.”

Her children were Aves Foote, Robert Foote, John Foote and Elizabeth Foote

death date of 18 July 1558 for Helen is an error. 18 July 1558 is the date before which Helen's husband John Foote, died. It was not her death date - she married her second husband after that date, on 19 Jan 1559, and must have died sometime after that.

Robert Foote of Shalford was the first son of John Foote of Royston. He is our second generation ancestor in England. He was born in the year 1552 and died. January 28, 1607/08, London, England.

(3) ii John Foote of London

John Foote of London was born about the year 1555 In Royston, Hertsfordshire, England. He married Margaret Brooke the daughter of John Brooke of London. He was nathaniel Foote's uncle. John was a citizen and Grocer of London. He died about the year 1616 and was buried at London England. John was married in the year 1581. His wife died about the year 1634 and is buried at St. Benets Grace Church in London. They had six children.

The will of John Foote of Royston, tallow chandler, was probated 18 July 1558; it mentions wife Helen, son Robert, son John Foot, daughter Aves Foote, daughter Elizabeth Foote. TAG 53 says that John is brother to Robert Foote who had sons Robert and John, daughters Elizabeth and Alice. This is based upon an anonymous pedigree in British Museum Additional MSS 5533, folio 99, quoted by Waters in "Genealogical Gleanings in England" p. 1285.

It says Robert was of Royston, Cambridgeshire, descended out of Lincolnshire, married to an unknown woman who married, second (___) Hall, sgt. trumpeter to Queen Elizabeth. TAG 54 questions this anonymous pedigree, presenting evidence that John was actually the father of Robert and John. Among other things, this accounts for the fact that no probate could be found for Robert the father. John had children Robert and John, Elizabeth and a daughter called Avis or Alice/Alis (probably a copyist error) -- the same children attributed to "father Robert".

On 19 January 1558/1559 at St. Peter Cornhill in London there is recorded the wedding of "John Haull, trumpetor and Ellen Foote, Widowe." The coincidence of children's names, spouses names, coupled with no findable will for Robert brings the authors to the conclusion John is the father, and the supposed father Robert is a confusion with John's eldest son.
