Mrs Helen Bessie Stuart-Pain, née Steel (born 1857)

On 13 February 1889 at St Giles’s Church, Helen Bessie Steel married George Stuart-Pain, the youngest son of the late Henry Pain of Wallop, Hampshire. George was a tea planter, and Helen went with him back to Balijam Assam. He died at the age of 40 at Lakhimpur, Assam on 25 August 1897. Helen does not appear in the 1901 or 1911 censuses, but by the time of her death in 1930 she had returned to England and was living at Hartford Bridge, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire:

† Mrs Helen Bessie Stuart-Pain née Steel died at Elvetham, Hampshire at the age of 72 on 16 February 1930 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 19 February (burial recorded in the parish register of St Giles’s and probably also Ss Philip & James’s Church).

Her effects came to £202 4s. 3d.



1911 Census - with her daughter in Worthing, head of housee in a 10-roomed house called "Balijan" on the corner of Rugby Rd and Eton Rd. George Blackham is a schoolmaster, a visitor; Laura Blackman is a servant. (see attached):
