This source http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE/2005... reproduces the local newspaper announcement of the birth of a daughter to Mrs Buchanan on 28 October 1844 at the New Bridge Toll (which was in Newton-on-Ayr, just over the river from Ayr).
Some confusion over the name of this daughter, as 'Helen' fits later census entries, but the name Jane comes up for this birthdate at "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," index, "FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTKN-BL8 : accessed 03 Jan 2013), Archibald Buchanan in entry for Jane Buchanan, 28 Oct 1844; citing reference - 2:15GZHX6, FHL microfilm 1041406."
In the March 1851 census, Helen Buchanan is a scholar aged 6 living in New Road, Newton, with William Buchanan (17) and her grandfather Joseph Barr (79). Meantime, Helen's mother and older siblings are seven miles north, at Loans, where her mother is described as 'wife' and a victualler. And her father is living with his eldest daughter and her husband just south of the river in Kirkport, working as a muslin weaver.
In the 1861 census Helen Buchanan (16), who was born in Newton, is with her aunt, Helen Derment (56) in New Road, Newton.
Her death date, marriage and children come from a family tree on Ancestry here http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/16262927/person/355135571. The middle names of two of her children (i.e. Barr and McCormick) confirm that Helen fits in this Buchanan family tree.
